What is the UI Diversity Catalyst Seed Grant?

The Diversity Catalyst Seed Grant program supports projects and programs with an immediate impact enhancing the diversity goals of the University of Iowa’s Strategic Plan: Renewing the Iowa Promise: GREAT OPPORTUNITIES – BOLD EXPECTATIONS, 2010-2016.

If your proposal will advance cross-cultural understanding, strengthen positive inter-group relation,s and promote a welcoming learning environment, is a NEW project or program and will benefit the campus directly, we would like to hear from you!

Application Checklist

There are several components applicants must include in the application. Please use this checklist to ensure that you have collected all the necessary materials and that you allow yourself ample to time to do so.

  • Title of grant
  • Name(s) of co-sponsors (i.e. student groups, academic department, university office)
  • The constituent group(s) your proposal seeks to represent.
  • Program proposal to include:
    • Introduction
    • Purpose statement
    • Objectives
    • Program description
    • Evaluation (identify metrics to measure and determine if program objectives were achieved)
    • Budget
    • Identify future funding options
    • Letter(s) of administrative support and/or collaboration.
      We recommend that you solicit letters of support/collaboration by September 23rd, 2013 (three weeks prior to the application deadline of October 14).
    • The program proposal does not exceed 2 pages, 12-point font, and is single-spaced
  • Confirm that the project or program is a new initiative

Who is eligible to apply?

Applicants must be currently enrolled at or employed by the University of Iowa. All proposed projects and programs must be new initiatives. Funds may not be used to support ongoing projects and programs.

What are the guidelines for submitting a proposal?

  1. Proposals must demonstrate collaboration between at least two groups, departments, or organizations at the University of Iowa that support a curricular domain.
  2. Proposals may be submitted in paper or electronic format.

What is the review process?

Proposals are examined by the Catalyst Seed Grant Committee. Members are charged with reviewing projects and recommending levels of funding. In cases where there is a conflict of interest, committee members will recuse themselves from the discussion.

What are the selection criteria?

Programs and projects will be evaluated based on:

  • Measurable impact on diversity as a core value as identified in Renewing the Iowa Promise: GREAT OPPORTUNITIES – BOLD EXPECTATIONS, The Strategic Plan for the University of Iowa, 2010-2016
  • High probability to complete program/project within the fiscal year of 2013-14 (June 2014)
  • Programming that supports a welcoming climate
  • Activities that enable sustainable efforts for the university climate
  • Evidence of collaboration across groups, departments or organizations at the University of Iowa
  • Quality and breadth of impact
  • The potential to engage a significant number of individuals in diversity efforts at the University of Iowa

What is required of the recipient?

  • We ask that all winning recipients have an ‘050’ fund account to which we can transfer funds. These funds must be spent by June 30, 2014 (end of the current fiscal year) and WILL NOT be replaced by the awarding department if not spent in time by the recipient.
  • All publicity and advertising must acknowledge the Diversity Catalyst Award Seed Grant as a funding source.
  • Program final reports must be submitted to the Office of Equal Opportunity and Diversity within 30 days of completion of the program and no later than January 31 of the following calendar year.

How can the funds be used?

Funds may be used for costs associated with trainings and workshops on campus such as:

  • Course materials
  • New equipment
  • Speaker fees for conferences/trainings
  • Funds to develop web-based trainings

However, they are restricted and MAY NOT be used for the following:

  • Support of speakers, unless tied to a training or workshop
  • Activities held off campus
  • Funding of publications (newsletters, journals, newspapers, brochures, etc.) unless the publication is part of the new initiative
  • Student stipends
  • Purchases of food

We anticipate awarding up to five (5) Seed Grants Awarded with a maximum of $1000 each.
