Julian West completed his undergraduage education at Grinnell College, and later earned his juris doctorate with Distinction from the University of Iowa College of Law, where he also earned the Faculty Award for Academic Excellence in Constitutional Law.  Subsequently, he gained extensive legal experience in a wide range of areas, including criminal jury trials, personal injury, workers' compensation, real estate, and other general practice.   Prior to joining the University of Iowa as an equity investigator, he served for six years as a magistrate.  

Originally from Decorah, Iowa, he now lives with his family in Iowa City.
