For its annual Cultural Event, UI UB had a night on the town with dinner at Granite City Food and Brewery in Cedar Rapids followed by Theatre Cedar Rapids' production of the Tony award-winning musical Dreamgirls.

Dreamgirls follows the story of a young female singing trio from Chicago, Illinois. Called "The Dreams," the young women find both success and heartache when an opportunistic show business promoter sets their careers soaring. As The Dreams’ Motown musical style becomes popular with black and white audiences, the trio’s lead singer gets demoted in favor of a more glamorous singer who had previously sung backup. Dreamgirls has won 6 Tony Awards and has been adapted into a major motion picture.

This musical, based upon the show business aspirations and successes of R&B acts such as The Supremes, The Shirelles, James Brown, Jackie Wilson, and others;  introduced students to the struggles of Motown artists in the 1960’s and to the incredible talent of local actors and actresses. The cast participated in a meet-and-greet after the show, allowing students to snap pictures and ask questions. UB students were surprised to find that many cast members were former UB students themselves, and some were around the same age, solidifying the message of the musical: talent doesn’t discriminate!
