DEI Unit Action Planning Guides and Tools
Individuals, committees, or teams interested in learning more about diversity, equity, and inclusion planning or need support on how to create an action plan can utilized resources on this website to plan strategically. Within this website, the Division of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion provides guides and tools to assist with your area's development and implementation of diversity, equity, and inclusion action plans.
Below you will find a planning road map that outlines the steps you will need to take in order to have an informed and successful process.

Build a Team
Before you can begin, you need to know who will be responsible for the planning precess. When choosing people for your team, pick people for the skills, strengths, and abilities that will apply to your diversity, equity, and inclusion strategic planning. It is a best practice to include as many levels of faculty, staff, and students as you are able or as it applies to your Unit. To help you be as successful as possible for the drafting and eventual implementation of your plan, we have provided a team building worksheet below.

- In order to think about team and unit readiness, have your team attend the BUILD: Making the Paradigm Shift from Diversity to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion to learn about foundational concepts. Individuals can register for this course through Employee Self-Service My Trainings. Teams are encouraged to attend the same session.
Collect and Analyze Data
Next, you will need to learn about the campus climate data connected to your specific area in order to create a foundation for your plan rooted in data. There are multiple avenues to get climate data related to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Below we have listed some available options here on campus.
- Request a presentation of the Campus Climate survey results for your area. To request, please email DDEI-Contact@uiowa.edu.
- Review Working@Iowa survey results. Visit the University Human Resources webpage to learn more: https://hr.uiowa.edu/working.
- Conduct a local survey and listening sessions. Consider using this Collecting and Analyzing Data PDF to guide your efforts. (coming soon)
Consult with Division of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Partners
An important next step is meeting with a partner from the Division of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion to discuss your unit's connection to the institution's Excellence through Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion objectives and goals. You will also discuss area-specific goals, strategies, critical tasks, and metrics.

Vet Plan with Stakeholders
When engaging in action planning, not only is having leadership on-board, but all of your stakeholders should have a chance to give you feedback prior to the implementation of your plan. You could achieve this in the form of a development group that helps with edits or through open forum presentations. You will also need for unit leadership and institutional leadership to understand your plan and direction. Prior to implementation, each plan will be shared with the UI Path Forward Steering Committee Work Group on Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Collaboration. The final step of your process is implementation. Two important factors of implementation include (1) insuring that you have a process to track progress and follow up regularly on assigned critical tasks, and (2) that you have a clear, transparent way of communicating the implementation process and status of each task.
