BGC: Outreach, Recruitment, and Admission of International Undergraduate Students/International Alumni Relations - A Strategic Resource in Internationalization

Monday, March 5, 2018 - 2:00pm to 4:00pm
International Commons (Room 1117) University Capitol Centre
200 South Capitol Street
Iowa City, IA 52240

The Office of Admissions will present a basic summary of international undergraduate student recruitment and admission processing at the University of Iowa. The session will describe how it prepares each year to do outreach around the globe to assist with the internationalization of the campus. Representatives will share how data drives the selection and formation of recruitment plans, give examples of the promotional materials used, and explain the communication trail set-up for prospects and admitted students. Attendees will also be shown an overview of the admission requirements, timeline for applications, and internal process for making admission offers and creating immigration documents.

Additionally, in this session, participants will be given an overview of the University of Iowa’s approach to international alumni relations. Participants will see examples of communications with international alumni via social media and personal email and will learn how to create successful international alumni events. Using examples, we’ll discuss the development and distribution of feature stories and bite-size nuggets about compelling international alumni in multiple formats and venues (print, web, social media, TV, videos, blogging, etc.). We will also discuss ways to cultivate an alumni culture with current students--our future international alumni. Anyone interested in engaging international alumni as a strategic resource in internationalization is encouraged to attend.

Participants may take courses individually, without working toward a certificate. Successful fulfillment of the Building Our Global Community certificate requires completion of one required core course and four elective courses. All courses taken for the program are free of charge to participants.

UI faculty and staff can sign up online through Employee Self-Service under the “Personal” tab in My Training; search for courses listed with BGC in the course title.

Individuals with disabilities are encouraged to attend all University of Iowa-sponsored events. If you are a person with a disability who requires a reasonable accommodation in order to participate in this program, please contact Brandon Paulson in advance at (319) 335-0335.
