A message concerning the violent homicide of an Iowan

Sept. 22, 2020

We are deeply disturbed by the murder of Iowan Michael Williams, a member of the Grinnell community whose burned body was discovered Sept. 16 in rural Jasper County.

We extend our deepest sympathy to Mr. Williams’ family, friends, and the Grinnell community. Anyone with information about his homicide is asked to call the Grinnell Police Department at 641-623-5679 or the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office at 641-792-5912.

We stand with our peers at Grinnell College, in acknowledging Williams’ violent death and in recognizing the long history of oppression of Black Americans. Hate has no place in our state, on our campus, or in our country. While any act of brutality is horrific and inexcusable, we recognize that this incident is especially distressful for our students, faculty, and staff of color.

We are here to offer support. Many resources are available, and we encourage you to reach out and ask for help. Our campus must be safe and inclusive for people of all backgrounds and our ability to create a community where all are supported, recognized, included, and safe is essential to our success.
