A message from Provost Fuentes regarding Fall 2020 SEVP Guidelines and University of Iowa international students

At the University of Iowa, we understand our strengths in academics, service, and research lie within the diversity of the minds and people in our community.

Last week, the Department of Homeland Security issued updated guidelines regarding international students’ visa statuses. The proposed policy states that international students who are enrolled in online only classes will lose student visas (F-1 visas), making them ineligible to stay in the United States. This situation is currently ambiguous and constantly changing, and we are still learning about the ramifications and guidelines.

We stand in solidarity with our international students. We recognize these policies are harsh and unnecessary. We will do everything we can to ensure our international students’ plans of study are as minimally affected as possible.

Our Office of International Programs will be updating campus regularly regarding these guidelines.

 In solidarity,

 Montse Fuentes

Executive vice president and provost
