Born and raised in Paterson, New Jersey, by two loving Puerto Rican parents, Ervin earned his Ph.D. in English at the University of Iowa in 2004. He also holds an M.A. in English from Rutgers University and a B.A. in Philosophy from Montclair State College, both in New Jersey. Prior to earning his graduate degrees, Ervin served as an active-duty U.S. Air Force Intelligence analyst for over four years, including a three-year tour in Germany. Overseas, he served as an Intelligence Operational Plans Staff Officer and an Iran-Iraq Persian Gulf Analyst.
Prior to joining TRIO SSS, Ervin taught literature, composition, and creative writing: fiction, at Mt. Mercy University, Kirkwood Community College, University of Iowa, Rutgers University, and elsewhere. As a Literacy Volunteers of America tutor, he has also taught reading skills to non-native and linguistically-challenged students in Iowa City, Iowa, Newark, New Jersey, and Chinatown, NYC.
Ervin’s hobbies include Taíno studies, writing and reading fiction, Shaolin Kung Fu and Qi Gong, gourmet cooking (Chinese, Thai, Italian, French, etc.), music (he was a college and dance club D.J.), and walking his sixteen-pound Pekinese, Baby, with his beloved better half. He also enjoys Skyping with family and friends in Spanish and German.
