Karla earned an associate of arts degree in Business Administration and Accounting from Muscatine Community College; a bachelor of arts in Spanish, a bachelor of business administration, and a Certificate in International Business from the University of Iowa; and a master of arts in Latin American Literature also from the University of Iowa.

Karla was an Adjunct Professor for 4 years at Muscatine Community College.  Currently in the Center for Diversity & Enrichment (CDE), she chairs the Latino/a Youth Leadership Development Summit, manages a case list of CDE students, serves as vice-chair of the UI Latino Council; and assists the Office of Admissions with bilingual college fairs in Illinois and Texas.  This year, Karla will be working closely with Ottumwa, Iowa conducting college presentations to students and their families.

Karla co-taught the course “Sustainable Healthcare and Social Services for the Needy” the winter of 2013-2014 in Pondicherry, India.  Karla will be traveling to Pondicherry again this winter of 2014-2015 to co-teach the course "Integrated Community Building: Serving Populations in Need, from Children to the Elderly".

Karla is bilingual in Spanish and English and bicultural from the USA and Mexico. She co-founded the Spanish Book Club in May 2012, which is open to the community and is sponsor by the Iowa City Public Library, she loves to read and dance.
