Karla earned an associate of arts degree in Business Administration and Accounting from Muscatine Community College; a bachelor of arts in Spanish, a bachelor of business administration, and a certificate in International Business from the University of Iowa; and a master of arts in Latin American Literature from the University of Iowa.

Karla was an adjunct professor for 4 years at Muscatine Community College. Currently in the Center for Diversity and Enrichment (CDE), she coordinates the Storm Lake Scholars Program and the CDE Summer Enrichment Institute (for high school students in the Iowa City area), she serves as treasurer for the UI Latino Council. She currently sits on eight different committees across campus. Karla co-teaches a course in collaboration with the School of Social Work for the India Winterim Program in Pondicherry, India.

Karla is very involved with the community. She co-founded the Spanish Book Club in May 2012, which is open to the community and is sponsored by the Iowa City Public LIbrary, she loves to read and dance. Karla had a lead role in the first Spanish play in the state of Iowa, "La Redención," written and directed by Ana Merino.

Karla is one of the recipients of the Board of Regents Staff Excellence Award for 2017.

Karla is bilingual in Spanish and English and bicultural from the USA and Mexico.
