Exploring White Identity for Effective Allyship
The Exploring White Identity for Effective Allyship workshop is for people who want to learn about and discuss the inherent privileges that come with being White.
This can be the first step for self-reflection and assuming greater personal responsibility by engaging in anti-racism work.

These workshops were developed at the request of several faculty and staff members (who identify as White) that had attended other training sessions related to race and specifically wanted a space in which to talk about White identity.
We first held discussion sessions on how to become better allies in spring 2017. During that semester we worked with UI faculty, staff and students, as well as Iowa City community members, to discuss individual’s experiences with race – both for individuals who identified as White and others who did not.
The committee is comprised of faculty, staff, and students from across campus who are dedicated to assuming greater personal responsibility for eliminating racism by addressing the racial self-perceptions of White people and the realities of racism, privilege, and the normalization of Whiteness.
