Who can participate?
The Social Justice reading group is a virtual program available to University of Iowa Faculty, Instructors, and Graduate Students with teaching responsibilities.
Registration is required, but there is not a deadline for 2021-22 programming.
Access Course and Materials
All materials are housed in ICON and can be accessed with your HawkID and Password.
The Social Justice Reading Group aims at promoting equity and inclusion through providing UI instructors with the foundational theoretical and pedagogical frameworks and inclusive practices for integrating diversity, equity, and inclusion in the classroom.
For the 2021 – 2022 academic year, the primary reference text will be Handbook of Critical Race Theory in Education edited by Marvin Lynn and Adrienne D. Dixson, which the group will read sections from in addition to that month’s specific materials. Each month, participants will explore a topic with a couple of accompanying materials, including chapters from the Handbook of Critical Race Theory in Education, articles, or videos.
Participants will commit to one virtual 60-minute Thursday session per month from Noon to 1 p.m. for the 2021 – 2022 academic year, and the standard preparation for each session will average around two to three hours. For more information, including the full list of the 2021 – 2022 academic year meeting dates, please go to the Social Justice Reading Group website by clicking this link.
We encourage you to register by Monday, September 6th.
If you have any questions, don't hesitate to contact Steven Edwards (email@example.com) and Sara Nasrollahian Mojarad (firstname.lastname@example.org). For the 2021-2022 academic year, there are 50 spots available on a first-come, first-serve basis.
After completing the registration form, we will contact you to confirm your participation in this group or indicate that you have been placed on a waitlist. Should a spot open up during the semester, we will inform those on the waitlist in order of registration time. If, at any point, your interest or availability for this program changes, please let us know.
