About

Organized by the Division of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and the Center for Teaching, the Social Justice Reading Group, aims to promote equity and inclusion by providing UI instructors with the foundational theoretical and pedagogical frameworks and inclusive practices for integrating diversity, equity, and inclusion in the classroom.  Utilizing Zoom and ICON, participants will attend a monthly session to engage in critical conversations with their colleagues about the readings and practice new skills and techniques. All UI Instructors (faculty, instructors, and graduate students with teaching responsibilities) are welcome to register.

Each month, participants will explore a topic with accompanying materials, which could include chapters, articles, or videos. The primary reference text will be the Handbook of Critical Race Theory in Education, edited by Marvin Lynn and Adrienne D. Dixson. The group will read sections from in addition to that month’s specific materials. Each month, participants will explore a topic with a couple of accompanying materials, including chapters from the Handbook of Critical Race Theory in Education, articles, or videos.

Participants will commit to one virtual 60-minute Thursday session per month from Noon to 1 p.m. for the 2022 – 2023 academic year, and the standard preparation for each session will average around two to three hours. Please go to the Social Justice Reading Group ICON site for more information, including the complete list of the 2022 – 2023 academic year meeting dates.

We encourage you to register by Monday, September 5th.

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to contact Steven Edwards (steven-edwards@uiowa.edu) and Sara Nasrollahian Mojarad (sara-nasrollahian@uiowa.edu). There are 50 spots available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

After completing the registration form, we will contact you to confirm your participation in this group or indicate that you have been placed on a waitlist. Should a spot open up during the semester, we will inform those on the waitlist in order of registration time. If, at any point, your interest or availability for this program changes, please let us know.

Individuals with disabilities are encouraged to attend all University of Iowa-sponsored events. If you are a person with a disability who requires reasonable accommodation to participate in this program, please contact Diversity Resources at ddei-iesi@uiowa.edu.
