Expectations

From the time a student enters the program until they graduate from the University of Iowa, our students are expected to maintain involvement through:

  • Enroll in and attend the 1-credit "Steps for Success for TRIO" class each semester
  • Meet with staff once/semester or as designated by TRIO SSS staff
  • Actively engage in their Individual Success Plan

Tutoring

TRIO SSS offers peer tutoring to eligible students at no cost. Tutoring is provided for all courses on campus, although this is not guaranteed. Tutoring is provided in one-on-one and small group formats.

Requesting Tutoring Services

A student must be an active participant to request a tutor through TRIO SSS. Students may request a tutor for any undergraduate course they are enrolled in across the institution. To initiate a request, a student must complete a Tutor Request Form (found in our office in 24 Phillips Hall ) and meet with the TRIO SSS Tutor Coordinator.

Student Expectations for TRIO tutoring:

  • Be on time for scheduled appointments
  • Meet with your tutor at the same time and same place each week
  • Notify tutor at least eight hours in advance if unable to keep an appointment
  • Attempt homework prior to meeting with tutor
  • Bring all necessary materials, including questions, to appointments
  • Attend class regularly
  • Keep tutor informed of your progress in the class

Audience

Current Student

Requirements

There are a few basic requirements to join TRIO SSS. You must be:

  • Enrolled as a full-time student at UI
  • U.S Citizen or eligible to receive federal financial aid

And

  • First-generation college student (neither parent or guardian has received a baccalaureate degree), or
  • Income eligible according to the federal government, or
  • Have a verified disability.

And

  • Demonstrate academic need.

You will be notified via email of your eligibility to receive services from TRIO SSS where further instructions will be provided.
