Social Justice Reading Group

Fall 2020

The Division of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and the Center for Teaching are offering a virtual Social Justice Reading Group for instructors and staff. Utilizing Zoom and ICON, participants will attend a monthly session to engage in critical conversations with their colleagues about the readings and practice new skills and techniques. All UI Instructors (faculty, staff, and graduate students with teaching responsibilities) are welcome to register.

The group will engage with new readings each month along with a continuous background reading throughout the academic year. For the 2020 – 2021 academic year, the primary reference text will be Advancing Social Justice: Tools, Pedagogies, and Strategies to Transform Your Campus by Tracey Davis and Laura M. Harrison, which the group will read excerpts from in addition to that month’s specific materials. Collectively, these sources will help guide the group through foundational theoretical and pedagogical frameworks and inclusive practices for integrating diversity, equity, and inclusion in the classroom.

Participants will commit to one 60-minute Friday session per month for the 2020 – 2021 academic year and the standard preparation for each session will average around one to two hours. Each month, participants will explore a topic with a couple of accompanying materials which could include chapters from Advancing Social Justice, articles, or videos.

For the 2020-2021 academic year, there are 50 spots available on a first come first serve basis. After completing the registration form, we will contact you to either confirm your participation in this group or to indicate that you have been placed on a waitlist. Should a spot open up during the semester, we will inform those on the waitlist in order of registration time. If at any point your interest or availability for this program changes, please let us know.

Join your colleagues in impactful conversations about the nuances of identity, advocacy, and social justice. Our new Virtual Summer Social Justice Reading Group happens every Friday from 1:00pm CST to 2:00pm CST. These virtual sessions will cover free-to-read books and/or publications that are available broadly or through the UI Libraries.
