Training and Education

Overview

The Division for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion provides a number of opportunities for faculty, staff, and students to increase their cultural knowledge and skills for contributing to a welcoming, inclusive, and equitable campus community.  On this page, you'll find links to our workshops and initiatives, as well as information about other relevant training opportunities on campus.

In-Person Opportunities

Every academic year, the Division of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion provides professional development opportunities through Learning and Development. The training sessions could be connected to a development series, such as Supervising at Iowa or the Advanced Management Series. Sessions could be part of campus-wide certificate programs like Building University of Iowa Leadership for Diversity or Building Our Global Community from International Student and Scholar Services. Feel free to check out training offerings through Learning and Development's "My Training" portal in Employee Self-Service.

If you are a student or community member and wish to attend any of the training sessions provided, feel free to email diversity-resources@uiowa.edu to ask about how you can get involved!

If you would like to request a training, speaker, or panelist for your college, department, or area, please complete the Service Request Form. Requests are reviewed bi-weekly and are fulfilled on a first-come, first-serve basis. As the training team has limited capacity to support the numerous training requests each year, please allow for ample time to plan for your service.

Resources

Request a book from our library!

Starting in August 2019, any University of Iowa faculty, staff, or student with a campus mail address can check out some of our favorite books on diversity, equity, and inclusion. We have a variety of books covering different experiences, topic areas, and theoretical approaches.

To browse our library, check out our Available Books Libib Catalog! You can find a comprehensive list of our library’s offerings by going to uiowadr.libib.com.

Did you find a book that interests you? Request a book by emailing us at diversity-resources@uiowa.edu. Please include your name, your HawkID, the book you’re requesting, and a campus mailing address inside the body of your email. A staff member will send you a confirmation email after your request has been processed and will mail the book shortly after.

After you check out a book, we will follow up with you in two weeks’ time. At that point, you have the option to renew the book if there are no other people waiting for that book to return. To return the book, please use campus mail to deliver the book back to our office at:

Diversity Resources

2750 University Capitol Centre

If you are looking for a book but cannot find it in our Available Books library, you can check our Currently Checked Out library to see if anyone is currently using the book. If so, you can email diversity-resources@uiowa.edu to place a hold on the item for when it returns.

If you are looking for recommendations for more books to continue you or your office’s education, you can peruse our Training Library to see examples of books we’ve used and recommended in the past. These books cannot be checked out, but you can contact diversity-resources@uiowa.edu to ask questions about them or to request excerpts from these books.

Check out connected articles!

We have begun to collect helpful articles and videos for your learning. Check out our searchable database here: Searchable Database. Want to add a resource? Feel free to send us an email at diversity-resources@uiowa.edu and we can get it added.
