Native American Heritage Month

Native American Heritage Month is celebrated in November to showcase the rich culture of the native people of this land as well as honor the Native American and Indigenous People who have suffered injustices.

It was initially celebrated in 1916 by the state of New York and was not until 1990 that President George H.W. Bush established it as a month-long festival.

National First Gen College Celebration Week

National First Gen College Celebration, held each year nationally on November 8 to commemorate the anniversary of the Higher Education Act of 1965, encourages colleges and universities across the country to celebrate the successes of the institution's first-generation faculty, staff, and students.

In 2018, the University of Iowa chose to extend the celebration to encompass a full week of events, which are hosted by departments and colleges across the university. Some events are targeted to specific populations, such as first-gen students in a specific college, while others are open to the entire campus community.

The event will be held on Thursday, November 10th, from 3:00-5:00 p.m., in the 2nd Floor Ballroom, IMU. There will be a reception from 3:00-3:30 p.m., followed by the ceremony. This year’s keynote address will be given by Dr. James Ankrum. These awards recognize first-generation student achievements as well as outstanding advocacy and support efforts of faculty and staff. This year’s award recipients will be announced in late October.

Individuals with disabilities are encouraged to attend all University of Iowa-sponsored events. An ASL interpreter will be provided during the ceremony. If you are a person with a disability who requires other accommodations in order to participate, please call (319) 335-2062 or email angela-lamb@uiowa.edu in advance.
