Preparing Hawkeyes for the global society and workforce

Hawkeyes are all of us.  Our students, faculty, staff, and alumni.  We come from diverse communities and life experiences, making each citizen unique. Learning to listen, understand, and communicate with those from different backgrounds is essential.

Cultural and global competency are developed through engaging with diverse individuals and ideas. Employers seek employees who can listen critically, understand various perspectives, work in diverse teams, and interact respectfully.

We define diversity broadly, ensuring all Hawkeyes develop skills to become culturally competent leaders in a global society and workforce.

Our institution represents all viewpoints, providing a comprehensive world view for informed decisions and opinions while practicing freedom of expression.

Defining Access, Opportunity, and Diversity at UI

  • Access: Equipping all Hawkeyes with the necessary skills to lead in a global society.
  • Opportunity: Ensuring every Hawkeye has the best chance for advancement and success.
  • Diversity: Enriching our community with a wide range of perspectives, experiences, and viewpoints.

The Division of Access, Opportunity, and Diversity works to maintain a productive and welcoming campus culture where everyone can contribute, find community, and work toward finding common ground. We do this through providing a campus-wide hub and spoke model with a focus on collegiate support, student recruitment and retention, and civil rights compliance.

The Engagement Framework

The Engagement Framework focuses and defines our campus wide skill development, decision-making, and culture building efforts to meet our goal of cultural and global competency for all Hawkeyes.
