About the Course

Education is essential to establishing a campus environment that is free of harassment and discrimination. The required courses are designed to educate university employees about prohibited conduct and the problems associated with harassment and discrimination, including sexual harassment and sexual misconduct, and to inform persons who have experienced harassment or discrimination of their rights. The courses also instruct administrators how to address complaints.

Current faculty/staff: All current faculty and staff members meeting the criteria set out in the Policy on Sexual Harassment and Sexual Misconduct must complete an approved Harassment Prevention (HP) course every three years (i.e., three calendar years from the date of their most recent training), unless more frequent training is required by the employing unit or college.

Academic and administrative officers (AAOs): All faculty and staff hired into and/or promoted to a position defined by the Policy on Sexual Harassment and Sexual Misconduct as an academic/administrative officer (e.g., VP, dean, DEO, student advisor, supervisor) must complete an approved Harassment Prevention (HP) course for AAOs/supervisors within the first two months of their appointment.

For more information, see the Operations Manual.

How do I request an extension of a due date for an employee on a medical, military, or other unpaid leave of absence?

Route the request via email to your senior HR leader or associate dean for faculty for approval and then ask that they forward the email request to OIE via email (oie-ui@uiowa.edu). Do not include detailed information about the reason for the leave, such as medical diagnosis, in your email.

How often does OIE update the completion records for the mandatory Harassment Prevention (HP) classes?

The online courses are delivered through the university’s learning management system (ICON); therefore, the Compliance and Qualifications and My Training systems will process and show completions within 24 hours of ICON course completion.

Completion records from instructor-led classes are updated by the departmental HR administrator who set up the on-site program shortly after completion of the instructor-led course.

How do I run the reports to view which of my faculty and staff are due to complete one of the HP classes this quarter?

The compliance reports for the HP classes are available from the Compliance & Qualifications (CQ) System. To access the reports, login to Compliance & Qualifications. Click the tab for Actions & Reports. Under the Harassment Prevention Reports section, click Harassment Prevention Compliance individual deadlines within the Quarter. This report defaults to the current quarter or you may select an alternate time period if you wish.

Additional harassment prevention compliance reports are available from the CQ site to track compliance rates and individual attendance.

Why haven’t the completion records shown up yet in CQ for some of our employees?

Completion records are not recorded immediately upon completion of the online or instructor-led programs. It’s best to run your reports 24 hours after the most recent data upload. See above for the schedule of online course completion data uploads.
