The Office of Access and Support (OAS), within the Division of Access, Opportunity, and Diversity (DAOD), is currently reimagining the Iowa Edge program in anticipation of the Fall 2025 semester. This initiative will align the program with Iowa state law by extending its services to any incoming University of Iowa student needing extra assistance during their transition to college life.

The Iowa Edge program is a four-year mentorship initiative designed to support students from under-resourced schools, first-generation college attendees, or transfer students. The program commences prior to the first semester and focuses on three key areas: networking, community building, and leadership development.

“We are excited to expand the Iowa Edge program, allowing any incoming student to benefit from additional time to acclimate before the full student body arrives,” stated Cassandra Gordon-Fletcher, Senior Director of OAS. “Some students need extra support to forge friendships, familiarize themselves with the campus, and feel at home before classes begin.”

Remarkably, over 50% of Iowa Edge students graduate from the University of Iowa in four years, and over 65% graduate within six years. Seventy-nine percent of the 109 students in the 2024 cohort were majors in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, with 28% being transfer students. Participants hailed from eight different states, with 74% being Iowa residents and 66% identifying as first-generation Hawkeyes.

Peer mentorship is essential to the program. UI students, many of whom were past participants, lead the sessions. In 2024, 38 peer leaders guided first-year students, with a ratio of 1:2 or 1:3. Peer leaders enhance their leadership and communication skills, preparing for post-graduation success while mentoring new Hawkeyes.

OAS is collaboratively working with various campus partners, including University Admissions, to leverage the best resources available to support students during this pivotal period in their college experience.  The new Iowa Edge program will focus on the Engagement Framework teaching the leadership skills for cultural and global competency. Additional information will be announced during the Spring semester for all incoming UI students.
