BUILD/ASC: Understanding the Culture Behind Sexual Assault

This is the first and foundational course of a three-workshop series called ASC: Advocating for a Safe Community. The course will help participants understand the societal stereotypes, behaviors, and barriers that make up rape culture and will include an introduction to strategies for combating rape culture, such as survivor ally ship, practicing consent, and bystander intervention, which will be discussed at a deeper level in the two subsequent workshops.

This session highlights how concerns unique to international students impact their mental health. These concerns can affect international students’ transition to the University of Iowa, their functioning on campus, and their broader adjustment to the United States. We will explore how the forbearance coping style affects some students’ ability to respond to stressors and interpersonal functioning. We will also explore cultural re-entry issues for students returning from a study abroad.

BUILD: Exploring the Influence of Implicit Bias in Our Work and Lives – The Research, Impact, and Strategies to Override

This workshop will explore implicit bias, including an introduction to key research studies showing the prevalence and potential impact of unchecked bias in employment practices, clinical interactions, mentoring, and everyday interactions. Participants will explore evidence-based strategies to reduce its impact using case-based discussions related to faculty/staff recruitment, retention, self-advocacy, and more.

In this two-part session, participants will learn about developing their intercultural insights by exploring the Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI). The IDI generates an individual profile of “worldview orientation to difference,” and is based on the research of Dr. Milton Bennett and Dr. Mitchell Hammer. Participants will need to complete the Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI) before the session. Participants will have an opportunity to sign-up and attend a follow-up 1 hour meeting with a trained IDI facilitator to receive feedback on their individual profile and discuss their individual development plan for intercultural growth.
